Vinegar and baking soda balloon experiment by Qwinn

We did an experiment to see if baking soda and vinegar would blow up a ballon.

First, we got two funnels, a balloon, vinegar, baking soda and an empty bottle.

Next, we got one funnel and put vinegar in a empty bottle. We put 1 cup of vinegar in.

Then, we used the clean funnel to put baking soda into a balloon.

Next, we had to attach the balloon to the bottle. This was tricky because you have make sure that no baking soda gets into the vinegar. When you put the balloon on make sure the baking soda is in the bottom of the balloon and is hanging over the side of the bottle until you are ready to go.

Finally, tip the bottom of the balloon up. When the baking soda and vinegar mix there is a chemical reaction and it foams. I think it makes a gas which blows up the balloon.

  1. What a fantastic experiment. Did you know the scientific word to use for 'blowing up' a balloon is 'inflate'. e.g. I inflated the tyres on my bike because they had deflated and become flat.
